Synopsis: After years of living in the past, Ella is ready to start building a future. The perfect opportunity presents itself when she is offered a short-term role at Halesmere House in the Lake District, and tasked with kick-starting its artists’ residence. She can’t wait to start and explore a new career in an inspiring location.
But when Ella arrives at Halesmere, she wonders if she’s made a huge mistake after she clashes with Max, the new owner. Max has his own reasons to be unsettled by her presence, but despite his misgivings it seems everyone else loves having Ella around. As a single dad, it’s his children’s attachment to her that bothers him most. Who will pick up the pieces when Ella leaves
What Max doesn’t know is that Ella is falling for more than just the Lake District and the community around her. Can her temporary job lead to a permanent happy ending?
I always say these types of books aren’t what I want to read.
But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t love them. Snowfall Over Halesmere House was such a fun, easy, cozy read, especially around the holidays. The setting, tone, and speed are all perfect for cuddling up next to the fire with a cuppa tea and reading for a spell.
Snowfall Over Halesmere House has all the hallmarks of a romantic holiday love story. Gorgeous setting at an old house in the English countryside? Check. Single lady feeling lost and wanting something new? Check. Single fella feeling a bit lost himself and perhaps a little stuck? Check. Quirky side characters that add tons of atmosphere and comedic relief? Check. You get the picture.
Ella and Max were both easy characters to love and root for. Honestly, every single character in the book was lovely. Well, I guess except for the one who’s not supposed to be. But they fill their role perfectly, which works well with the rest of the story. Ella is a hard worker who is nursing a painful loss that has turned the trajectory of her entire life. Max is in a somewhat similar position, and what starts out rough soon turns into a beautiful friendship. But is that friendship enough? That’s the real question.
Max has two lovely children, Lily and Arlo, and they were my favorite characters out of the whole bunch. They were just so wonderful! Children can sometimes come off as more mature than their written ages, but Suzanne Snow crafted such genuine characters, and I instantly fell in love with them.
The plot flowed nicely, and it was a really fast read for me.
On top of that, it read easily. The words just floated off of the pages, making it very enjoyable to sit and read in long sittings. Because of that, it’s easy to fall into Snowfall Over Halesmere House. It’s easy to feel like a member of the village, a part of the community. And I think that’s where the magic lies. I was swept up in the lives of everyone in the community, and I felt like I was getting to know my new neighbors. Each character is layered and complex, and their sense of being is genuinely believable.
Snowfall Over Halesmere House is a wonderfully uplifting story about love, life, and living it to the fullest. Grab opportunities when you can. Let the past be the past, and live wholly in the here and now. Turning the last page left me a little sad to be finished with Halesmere so soon, but also tremendously happy with the story. It is the perfect pick-me-up in book form.
While it is a romance, there aren’t any seriously spicy scenes.
Kissing, yes, but the rest is kept behind closed doors. The focus is more on friendship, trust, and genuine love of all forms, including the romantic kind, rather than the bedroom scenes. If you prefer clean romance, I think you’ll enjoy Snowfall Over Halesmere House.
So if you need a happy, festive read that explores how a group of people can overcome their past hurts and heartbreaks to find happiness again, Snowfall Over Halesmere House is the book for you. It isn’t a book that had any sort of profound impact on me, but it was a read that I enjoyed and that I hope others will, too.
And can we take a moment to acknowledge that the author’s name is Suzanne Snow? How perfect is that for a cozy holiday read!
